In his first State of the Union address, U.S. President Donald Trump called on Congress to address what he called the "fundamental flaws" in the Iran nuclear deal, and called China and Russia "rivals".

Trump also addressed recent protests against the regime in Iran, reminding his audience that he "did not stay silent".

"American stands with the people of Iran in their courageous struggle for freedom," Trump said.

Trump mentioned Russia only once, despite headlines about Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into whether Trump or his aides colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential election dominating the news over the last week.

Russia and China are "rivals" Trump said, "that challenge our interests, our economy and our values."

Trump called on Congress to end the defense sequester and fully fund the military.
